Designed to provide German infantry fire support in accordance with the tactical concepts of blitzkrieg, the Sturmgeschütz III was developed into new and enhanced versions with a different mission profile as the war progressed. On the Eastern Front, encounters with the most powerful and innovative Soviet tanks led to an expansion of its role, moving from supporting infantry units to providing effective anti-tank defence. Its simple and cost-effective design made it one of the most widely produced vehicles in German industry until the end of the war. With the advent of the “G” version, which specialised in the anti-tank role, the version with a 105 mm howitzer (Sturmhaubitze 42) was also introduced.
