The M4 Sherman medium tank was undoubtedly the most widespread and widely used armoured vehicle during the Second World War. The M4 formed the backbone of the American armoured forces and was produced in numerous versions and variants. The first to go into production on a large scale was the Sherman M4A1, characterised by its rounded hull and cast turret. The first Shermans were equipped with a 75 mm gun, which was later replaced by a 76 mm high velocity gun. The Sherman M4A1 was put into service in 1942 and equipped the armoured units of the US Army during the first months of the war. However, its true strength lay in its design. The Sherman was economical, reliable and easy to produce in large numbers.
